An original oil pastel painting by Lori Brunner from Love Letter to La Jolla, a series inspired by the life, light and visual language of Southern California.

Pink & Orange Surfboards transforms a familiar icon of coastal life through color, abstraction and repetition. Warm pink and saturated orange create a composition that feels spirited and graphic, while the hand-worked quality of oil pastel gives the piece an expressive softness.

Rather than depicting the coast literally, the painting draws from the visual memories of life in La Jolla—the surfboards, sun-washed color, warmth and casual beauty of objects that become part of the everyday landscape.

The repeated forms create a strong visual rhythm, while the unexpected palette gives the work its distinctive personality. Bold in color yet relaxed in spirit, the painting captures something essential about Southern California without becoming conventionally coastal.

At 47 × 35 inches, the work has a substantial presence. It currently hangs in the primary bedroom of Lori’s La Jolla home, where its warm palette and graphic composition bring art, color and a sense of place into the room.

Presented in a solid maple frame, the natural wood provides a quiet architectural counterpoint to the expressive surface and saturated color of the painting.
