Blue & Green Surfboards transforms a familiar icon of coastal life through color, abstraction and repetition. Cool blue and green tones create a composition that feels fresh and graphic, while retaining the expressive, hand-worked quality of oil pastel.

The palette has an inherent connection to the landscape that inspired the larger collection—the shifting colors of the Pacific, coastal vegetation and the particular quality of light found along the Southern California coast. Yet the work is not intended as a literal depiction of the beach. Instead, familiar surfboard forms become an exploration of shape, rhythm, color and memory.

There is both energy and ease in the composition. The repetition gives the work a strong visual rhythm, while the cooler palette brings a sense of calm—capturing something of the relaxed confidence of life in La Jolla.

At 47 × 35 inches, the work has a substantial presence while retaining the immediacy and intimacy of a work created in oil pastel. Presented in a solid maple frame, the natural wood provides a clean, architectural counterpoint to the color and expressive surface of the painting.

This original work is displayed in Lori Brunner’s La Jolla home and was photographed by Douglas Friedman in AD Italia, offering a rare glimpse of the painting within the interiors and environment that inspired the larger Love Letter to La Jolla collection.
