Aqua & Brown Surfboards
An original oil pastel painting by Lori Brunner from Love Letter to La Jolla, a series inspired by the life, light and visual language of Southern California.
Three abstracted surfboard forms float against a rich, earthy brown field, their soft aqua centers traced with an unexpected edge of yellow. Familiar imagery is reduced to color, shape and repetition—transforming an icon of Southern California surf culture into something graphic, playful and distinctly modern.
There is a wonderful tension in the piece between the earthiness of the brown, the coolness of the aqua and the electric note of yellow. The simplicity of the composition gives the work its strength, while the texture and immediacy of oil pastel keep it expressive and unmistakably handmade.
Like the larger Love Letter to La Jolla collection, the painting isn't intended as a literal depiction of the coast. Instead, it captures the memory and feeling of a place—sun, water, surf culture and the easy visual rhythm of life near the Pacific.
Presented in a solid maple frame, the natural wood provides a quiet architectural counterpoint to the saturated color and hand-worked surface of the painting.
